Short answer

An hour of an AI agent is not the same as a human hour. The agent is available at any hour and applies the same rule to every case, but it needs clear rules and someone who reviews it. The person brings judgment, negotiation, and how they treat people. It is worth comparing the cost per finished task and the hours nobody covers, more than the price of the hour.

01A human hour and an agent hour are not the same unit

Comparing the price of a person's hour with the price of an AI agent's hour is tempting, and it is almost always misleading. A person's hour includes judgment, how they treat people, and the ability to solve what has never happened before. An agent's hour includes availability at any hour and the same rule applied to every case, but it needs clear instructions and someone to review it.

On top of that, people's hours are few, and they are about to get fewer. The maximum workweek in Mexico is 48 hours a week in 2026 and will drop two hours a year until it reaches 40 hours by 2030, without lowering salaries1. And not every one of those hours is productive: in an Asana survey, knowledge workers said they spend 53% of their time on work about work, like communicating, searching for information, and chasing tasks2. That is exactly the kind of work an agent absorbs best.

The useful comparison has three parts: cost per finished task, the hours nobody covers today, and what each one does better.

02The comparison matrix

CriterionHuman hourAgent hour
AvailabilityMaximum workweek of 48 hours in 2026, dropping to 40 by 20301Any hour, including nights, weekends, and holidays
Cost beyond salaryBetween 38% and 50% on top of what the worker receives3A monthly service fee, with no Christmas bonus, dues, or payroll tax
Ramp-upRecruiting, hiring, and trainingDiscovery and implementation for each process
TurnoverTurnover in Mexico reaches 17% a year, according to AMEDIRH4What it learned stays in the company's shared memory
Peak workloadOvertime or one more positionAbsorbs the peak with the same setup
ConsistencyVaries with fatigue, workload, and the dayApplies the same rule to the first case and the thousandth
Judgment and mannerNegotiates, comforts, reads context, and decidesFollows rules and passes on what does not fit
Typical mistakesData entry, oversights, and delaysMisreading a document or a new case, and errors can compound if nobody reviews it5

The two columns complement each other. Anthropic reports that in the use of its assistant, conversations where AI augments a person's work outweigh those where it automates it completely6.

03What an hour of today's workweek costs

The table takes the median salary of six roles that Computrabajo publishes, adds the 38% to 50% in charges that Minu calculates3, and divides by the hours in the 2026 maximum workweek1.

RoleMedian monthly salaryMonthly cost to the companyCost per hour worked
Data entry clerk$7,4457$10,274 to $11,1683$49 to $541
Customer service representative$7,8038$10,768 to $11,7053$52 to $561
Administrative assistant$9,1359$12,606 to $13,7033$61 to $661
Sales representative$9,98410$13,778 to $14,9763$66 to $721
Accounting assistant$10,14511$14,000 to $15,2183$67 to $731
Cost analyst$15,75612$21,743 to $23,6343$105 to $1141

The cost per hour comes from dividing the monthly cost by 208 hours, which is 48 hours times 52 weeks divided by 12 months1. That is the paid hour, not the productive one, and once the workweek drops to 40 hours, every hour will cost more for the same salary1.

Read on its own, the table suggests a data entry hour is cheap. The expensive part shows up somewhere else: in the hours nobody covers, in the volume that forces positions open, and in the analyst's work that goes into data entry.

04The hours nobody covers

A company with office hours leaves nights, weekends, and holidays unattended. That is where prospects get lost and customers get upset. Harvard Business Review found that companies that tried to contact a prospect within the first hour were almost seven times more likely to qualify them than those that waited one hour more, and that in an audit of U.S. companies the average response took 42 hours13. In Mexico's real estate sector, Trichter Consulting reports with its own data that 40% of the conversions AI started happened outside business hours14.

Illustrative

Covering every hour of the week

A week has 168 hours. With 48-hour shifts, covering all of them with people takes at least 3.5 service positions, which in practice means four once you account for days off and vacation. At a salary of $7,803 and 40% in charges, four reps cost about $43,700 a month.

The other option is to combine them. One person handles the cases that call for judgment during office hours, and an agent takes in everything that arrives at any hour, answers what follows a rule, and leaves what needs a person ready for the morning. Coverage is total, and payroll does not grow.

05How we combine human hours and agent hours

At Omni Agent we do not start from how many hours can be taken away, but from what each one does better. We are an AI consultancy based in Mérida, Yucatán: we install, connect, and maintain agents that run on top of models that already exist, mainly Anthropic's.

In Discovery we measure each process's volume, meaning how many times a month each thing happens and how long it takes today. With that, we classify every task into one of three columns:

Type of taskWho does itExamples
Repetitive with clear rulesThe agent, with a person reviewing a sampleEntering invoices, reconciling the bank, answering an order's status
Repetitive but with exceptionsThe agent prepares and a person approvesThe payment proposal, a warranty validation, a report for the board
Judgment, manner, or riskA person, with the information already put together by the agentNegotiating, keeping a customer, authorizing a payment, signing

After that comes the twelve-month contract, signed once Discovery ends if you decide to move forward. In implementation, we connect the agents to your systems with minimal permissions, and in maintenance, we measure every month the hours the team stopped spending against the Discovery baseline.

What your company gains: hours from your team going back to selling, deciding, and serving; full coverage with no night shifts; current numbers instead of waiting for the close; and the capacity of a director-level area working at any hour.

06Where the human hour is worth more

  • Negotiating and closing. An agent prepares the proposal; the person reads the other side and decides how far to go.
  • Upset customers and new cases. What has never happened before has no rule. The agent passes it to a person instead of improvising.
  • Decisions that commit the company. Payments, signatures, and legal or tax judgment calls are made by a person.
  • Low-volume processes. If something happens five times a month, it is rarely worth installing an agent just for that.
  • Without review, there is no savings. An agent nobody reviews piles up errors, and fixing them costs more hours than it saved.

Tell us which task eats the most hours and we will measure it with you.
